About the position
The Correctional Officer 2 position is a critical role within the Alaska Department of Corrections, responsible for maintaining security and order within adult correctional facilities. Officers will perform a variety of security duties, including monitoring prisoners, conducting routine inspections, and ensuring the safety of both inmates and staff. This position requires a commitment to public safety and the rehabilitation of offenders, as Correctional Officers play a vital role in helping individuals reintegrate into society upon their release. The job involves a mix of administrative, operational, and educational responsibilities, all aimed at supporting the overall safety and security of the institution. New hires will undergo a seven-week training program at the Correctional Officer Academy, where they will learn essential skills such as self-defense, conflict resolution, and the use of firearms. Upon successful completion of the academy and the probationary period, officers will receive certification from the Alaska Police Standards Council. The work schedule consists of alternating week-long shifts, with both day and night duties, and may require mandatory overtime.

Responsibilities
- Perform security duties among prisoners in an adult correctional institution or facility.
- Conduct routine security checks and inspections to ensure safety and compliance.
- Assist in maintaining order and discipline within the facility.
- Operate the security control room and monitor surveillance equipment.
- Learn and apply techniques for handling unruly and violent prisoners.
- Engage in conflict resolution and use appropriate force when necessary.
- Participate in administrative and operational duties to support facility operations.
- Assist in creating an atmosphere conducive to the rehabilitation of prisoners.
Requirements
- Successful completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy or an equivalent program accredited by the Alaska Police Standards Council.
- One year of experience in custody, security, and rehabilitation of prisoners in an adult correctional institution.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen or U.S. National.
- Possession of a valid driver's license issued within the United States at the time of appointment.
Nice-to-haves
