The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill multiple regular, full-time positions in the class of Correctional Officer I at the Yolo County Sheriff's Office.

Applications will be reviewed on a WEEKLY basis, and applicants that satisfy the minimum qualifications will be referred to the Sheriff's Office every Monday to be scheduled for a hiring panel interview. Applicants that pass the interview will be invited to the written exam. Successful candidates will be asked to begin the background process, which can potentially result in a conditional job offer.

THE POSITION
Selected candidates will be assigned to work at the Monroe Detention Center in Woodland, CA. Under direct supervision, to assist in the guarding, control, and supervision of inmates at an adult detention facility; and to do other related work as required.

This is the entry level class into the Correctional Officer series. Incumbents are expected to perform a variety of duties in inmate intake, processing, and custody; in a training capacity learn to perform the full range of correctional duties characteristic of the class of Correctional Officer II. Incumbents are expected to fully qualify for Correctional Officer II at the end of one year in this position.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical of those performed by the incumbent in this classification; however, other duties may also be required:


  • Receives, books and processes incoming inmates; prepares related paperwork; photographs inmates, and takes fingerprints.
  • Maintains security through key, door, tool, and equipment control.
  • Receives visitors; processes correspondence, phone calls and request slips.
  • Controls contraband through routine facility and inmate searches; supervises the conduct and security of inmates in cells and in movement during meals, visitation, and institutional activities.
  • Supervises inmates in the performance of assigned duties; is responsible for the discipline and control of inmates; assists medical and psychiatric staff in the management of inmates.
  • Promotes positive attitudes among inmates through instruction and discipline.
  • Watches for changes in moods or attitudes among the inmates that might indicate a security or safety risk.
  • Investigates non-criminal incidents within the facility.
  • Performs monetary transactions, data terminal operations, and processing of booking, bail, warrants and court paperwork.
  • Prepares prisoners for and assists in their transportation; processes inmate discharges and release.
  • Arranges for medical care of sick and/or injured inmates.

 

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D.

Age: Applicants must be minimum 21 years of age at time of appointment

Background Requirements: Shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state or in any Federal jurisdiction; or convicted of any offense in any other state or in any Federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state.
Shall have good moral character and integrity as determined by a thorough background investigation according to specifications of the State of California Board of Corrections

License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.


Knowledge of: criminal attitudes and behavior patterns; purposes and methods of discipline as applied to persons under criminal confinement.

Ability to: interpret and enforce institutional rules, regulations and policies with firmness, tact, and impartiality; effectively control, direct and instruct inmates individually and in groups; understand and follow rules, oral and written instructions; promote acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates; make quick, effective and reasonable decisions in emergencies; learn and use radio, safety and security equipment, emergency medical equipment, fire suppression and evacuation equipment; operate office equipment and type simple forms and reports; conduct cell and body searches; respond to emergencies which may include breaking up fights, holding a person down, or avoiding a punch; lift and carry bodies, run up stairs in emergencies, climb stairs, and walk all day or stand for long periods of time; hear radio, alarms, phones or low sounds; identify sounds in emergency situations; operate control panels and switches; remove materials from cells, conduct searches and pat downs; remove handcuffs; bend, stoop, squat, kneel and crawl.
