The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a dependable and safety-conscious individual to join the Southwest Region (SWR) Highway Maintenance team. This journey-level position will play a vital role in maintaining the safety and functionality of our highways, facilities, and fleet by performing skilled maintenance and repair work. Operating a wide range of specialized equipment and tools, the successful candidate will help ensure the efficient movement of people and goods across the region. This position will also play a critical part in emergency response efforts, environmental stewardship, and may lead crews in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. An ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, strong teamwork and communication skills, technical proficiency in highway maintenance operations, and a firm commitment to safety and public service.


What to Expect

This position may require working weekends and holidays and may involve responding to emergency calls outside of scheduled hours, with a response time of 45 minutes. Employees must be prepared for emergency situations in any weather, 24/7, and may work long hours, including nights and rotational shifts. Standby and call-back may be needed occasionally.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Operate Class A, B and C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.
  • Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt and synthetic materials.
  • Perform drainage maintenance; sign maintenance and repair; guardrail, fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Perform tree removal and vegetation management.
  • Track, document and report daily work activities, account for inventory and inventories highway section.
  • Perform snow and ice control, including application of anti-icing compounds to road surface with truck mounted equipment, loading trucks, hauling materials such as sand, gravel and other items, and maintaining stockpile sites.
  • Design and set up traffic control; full road or bridge closures; perform traffic control; and conduct moving and stational traffic control operations.
  • Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
  • Lead and train crew members in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Highway Maintenance and Equipment Operation: Demonstrated ability to perform roadway and highway, farming, or construction maintenance tasks using a wide variety of tools and heavy equipment, including pavement repair, drainage system maintenance, vegetation control, snow and ice removal, and other skilled fieldwork.
  • Commercial Driver’s Licensing (CDL) Proficiency: Possession of a valid, Class A CDL with “N” endorsement, without airbrake restrictions.
  • Traffic Control and Safety Certification: Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging Card, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Safety Awareness and Compliance: Demonstrated commitment to safety, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Respect and Equity: Demonstrated ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters a culture of respect and equal opportunity for all.


In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds.
  • Ability to respond to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours callout.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Educational Foundation: Demonstrated foundational knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
  • Traffic Control Experience: Demonstrated experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
  • Highway Maintenance Experience: Experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or in comparable work.
  • Snow Removal and Anti-Icing Operations: Experience performing snow removal and anti-icing operations using plow trucks.
  • Local Area Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of the surrounding area to support effective maintenance operations.
  • Multidisciplinary Experience: Well-rounded experience across multiple maintenance disciplines.
